Brenton,

Dawkins is a atheist biologist and has no business sticking his nose in historical theology. The reason these atheists dismiss the biblical portrait of Jesus, is because they approach the subject with the presupposition that the supernatural and God do not exist. This bias obstructs their reasoning.

Read "THE DAWKINS DELUSION," by Mcgrath.

Your bias for historicizing mythology obstructs your own reasoning G.O., can't you see that?

Trying to prove that Jesus didn't exist is a lost cause. You can provide strong evidence that many of the events in the Bible did not actually take place. But was there a man back then named Jesus who had similar teachings? Who knows.

I personally think the theories that he was based after an actual Mystic or someone trying to claim to be the Jewish Messiah are just as tenable as the theory that he was fabricated out of thin air.

Yes, this would appear to be a potential case, were it not for all the similar concepts from centuries to millennia prior to any Jesus or Christianity. We have plenty of evidence of this from the ancient pagan religions - this is often omitted by those who chose to believe in the biblical Jesus or even just a historical Jesus. Both of which I now consider a leap of faith.

Richard Dawkins Admits Jesus Existed

Lets keep in mind that Dawkins is a biologist not a theologian and he's quite terribly misinformed as there exists no credible evidence for a historical Jesus. Dawkins relies on other biblical scholars who tell him a historical Jesus must have existed and I address that here: Religion and the Ph.D.: A Brief History

If Dawkins thinks there was a historical Jesus, then, he needs to provide the evidence and since he just made the positive claim that "Jesus existed," therefore, the 'burden of proof' is now his responsibility to substantiate the claim.
