I'm just sharing this because it contains a fairly long list of texts outside of the canon that may be of interest.

Quote:
New Testament apocrypha

"New Testament apocrypha are a number of writings of the early Christian church that give accounts of the teachings of Jesus, aspects of the life of Jesus, accounts of the nature of God, or the teachings of his apostles and of their lives. These writings often have links with those books which are regarded as "canonical". Not every branch of the Christian church is in agreement as to which writings are to be regarded as "canonical" and which are "apocryphal"."

Contents:

* 1 Definition
* 2 History
* 3 Gospels
3.1 Infancy Gospels
3.2 Jewish Christian Gospels
3.3 Rival versions of canonical Gospels
3.4 Sayings Gospels
3.5 Passion Gospels
3.6 Harmonic Gospels
* 4 Gnostic Christian texts
4.1 Dialogues with Jesus
4.2 General texts concerning Jesus
4.3 Sethian texts concerning Jesus
4.4 Ritual diagrams
* 5 Acts
* 6 Epistles
* 7 Apocalypses
* 8 Fate of Mary
* 9 Miscellany
* 10 Fragments
* 11 Lost works
* 12 A note about orthodoxy
* 13 Evaluation
* 14 See also
* 15 External links

The word "apocrypha" means "hidden writings" and comes from the Greek through Latin. The general term is usually applied to the books that were considered by the church as useful, but not divinely inspired. As such, to refer to Gnostic writings as "apocryphal" is misleading since they would not be classified in the same category by orthodox believers.

Could be an interesting read, but where is the Gospel of Thomas? Are they going to have a fifth gospel in the NT? I know Karen Armstrong has said it should be included and Spong has said a few things about it too.

Yeah, they include the Gospel of Thomas in the Nag Hammadi library section

You know, if one were able to read all those books, I think they would really have their eyes opened. Even reading some of them, may even open their eyes to the fiction that it really is.

And one can understand why they weren't canonized. We would never even know about all those other texts if the hierarchy of the churches had their way. They're happy with the canon the way it is - it makes them lots of money ... with tax-exempt status of course.

And some people wonder why I bring up the Star Trek sci-fi literary series as a comparison? Well... It's all right there to be found. The Christ myth is just another literary series- different genre, same read though.

Anyone see that south park episode where the voice of Jesus is talking to one of the kids? When Jesus gets finished the voice of Luke Skywalker comes in and says a few words to the kid as well, then Spiderman.... :lol:

I am unaware how our 20/20 hindsight lets us "understand" anything. It is not hard to find the reason for four and only four gospels being attributed to the brilliant reasoning of some saint or other. It is a bit harder to find a copy of his brilliant reasoning to see what he said. When you do you find it is no more than a listing of things which come in fours like winds and cardinal directions. (The skeptic might inquire as to the fourth person of the Quadity, the Trinity plus One, but the Trinity thing came along much later.)

Making up reasons that appeal to us today has no bearing upon the reasons actually used at the time. And beyond this one "argument" that good things come in fours I have come across nothing related to which were selected and why. There is damned little referring to things that were excluded and so far as I am aware nothing giving a description sufficient for us to determine which document the person is talking about.
